Youth Activities & Scholarships

As is our Elk tradition, the Lodge held its 2024 Flag Day observance on Wednesday, June 12. We not only witnessed the Elks beautifully moving Flag Day ceremony, but were able to present awards and scholarships to Joseph Puvogel (Henry Wessels Scholarship), Keira McCaffrey (Doe Club Scholarship), Alec and Brandon Dampman (Students of the Year), and Edward Parisi (Elk of the Year). We also heard Jaida Ciampi read her essay, "Echoes of Freedom," her tribute to the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Jaida was the 2024 winner of the Glen Cove Salutes Military Tribute Banner Program’s Echoes of Freedom Essay Contest.

This year, special significance was given to the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. PER Thomas Staab gave a stirring reminder that one of our Lodge’s members, Theodore Roosevelt III (or Teddy Jr) was instrumental in aiding to the success of the Normandy invasion. Roosevelt was a hero at Utah Beach on D-Day. He was the only general to land on the beach with his men in the first wave. Upon discovering the wind and tide had caused them to land a mile or so off target, Teddy quickly assessed the area and modified the attack plan. He then greeted the soldiers on the beach and calmly informed and diverted them about the revised plans. Years later, Omar Bradley was asked to name the single most heroic action he had ever seen in combat. He replied, "Ted Roosevelt on Utah Beach."

Congratulation to Jaci Narducci,  granddaughter of  Pat and our Lodge Chaplain, Carmela Narducci who was awarded a $4,000 Elk Legacy Award Scholarship for her outstanding academic performance. These are available to children or grandchildren of Elks .

New Hyde Park-North Shore Lodge was able to secure an ENF Gratitude Grant for New Hyde Park Memorial High School. We partnered with the school's Center Stage Program to service students with special needs. The Center Stage Program provides an opportunity for special education students & students with special needs to participate in an inclusive theater program under the guidance of Ellen White, the co-founder of Backyard Players & Friends. This program provides these students with an opportunity to work toward a common goal with their general education peers and other members of the community.

Third graders from the New Hyde Park Manor Oak School were presented with their own personal dictionaries as part of the Elks Dictionary Project.

The Lodge hosted an Eagle Court of Honor for three scouts from Troop 544 of Notre Dame Parish who attained the rank of Eagle Scout. An Eagle Scout is the highest advancement in Boy Scouting. Only 4% of all scouts achieve this honor.  Pictured (l-r) are PDD Robert Giglio, Eagle Scout Anay Patel, Eagle Scout Torsten Gliszczynski, Eagle Scout Sebastiano Paccione, and Kathleen Lang.
